Howard Leighton's DinkyDots innovation was selected recently as semifinalist entry in the Staples Invention Quest 2003 Contest. Out of some 8,000 entries nationwide, Howard's entry finished in the top 120. DinkyDots are still being evaluated as possible products to be sold by Staples. A photograph and article describing Howard and his work appeared in the March 13, 2004 issue of The Burlington Free Press.
Howard is a member of InventVermont. The DinkyDot idea came to him several years ago, but he had done nothing about it until Norm Etkind, the President of InventVermont showed Howard an announcement for the Staples contest. Howard credits InventVermont with giving him the incentive to put his idea up for public scrutiny rather than let the idea dwindle and die.
There are several other double-sided adhesive fasteners on the market with many uses, but all of them tend to stick on unintended surfaces, and exact placement is difficult to control. Howard devised a novel packaging scheme for small double-sided adhesive dots that allows them to be carried in your purse or pocket. They can be handled easily and precisely without them sticking to the wrong thing. The innovation lies in a packaging method that simplifies their use in a practical way.
While waiting for Staples to reach a final decision on their use of DinkyDots, Howard is devising alternative packaging and manufacturing methods for DinkyDots. Howard continues to attend InventVermont monthly meetings where he shares his experiences with other inventors.
