Prototype Common-Path Point-Diffraction Phase-Shifting Interferometer
There is Light at the End of the Tunnel
August 05, 04
Contact: Dr. Thomas G. Ference
tomcatofvt@aol.com

Dr. Thomas Ference, vice president of InventVermont, and his business partner William Cottrell have been working on commericializing their invention a Common-Path Point-Diffraction Phase-Shifting Interferometer. Interferometers are metrology tools that are widely used for characterizing optical elements and systems. Their start up company Interphase Technologies, Inc. successfully received VT EPSCoR funding to help show feasibility of their idea. Dr. Ference notes that developing a working prototype is key in getting potential partners interested in the further development and marketing of your product.

For the independent inventor, the path to successfully commercializing an idea is a complex one. It requires the integration of many resources. Finding those resources can be an arduous task. Dr. Ference points out InventVermont is a great place to find those resources. He had never before licensed an invention. However, with the help of attorney's from Downs, Rachlin and Martin, corporate sponsors of InventVermont, he and his business partner recently signed licensing and development agreements with another company to commercialize their interferometer. Thanks to the support of these and many other resources he has found through InventVermont he is starting to see the light at the end of the inventor's tunnel.
