Patent Searching: Is Your Invention Fit for the Launch Pad or the Graveyard?

Alan Coté will speak about the importance of patent searching as part of the invention process. Patent searches can readily be performed on-line using a number of different free databases, and the findings can be an invaluable tool for the inventor. Examining patents closest to your idea can result in multiple outcomes: you might more clearly define the new inventive elements of your idea; you might find that your exact idea has been patented already; or the search results may be the catalyst for creating a better solution. Patents represent a huge depository of knowledge, and reading them can be a great way to ricochet your ideas into a new inventions. We'll do a sample patent search for a real idea, and discuss strategies for the best ways to put the results to use.
