Filing for Foreign Patent Protection from the United States: PCT and Other Foreign Filing Issues
Protecting innovations via the patent system has become increasingly important to businesses around the globe. Many businesses in Vermont have tackled patents here in the United States. However, extending patent strategies beyond our borders can seem like an overwhelming process. There are several systems in place worldwide to assist patent applicants with the high costs and complexities of placing a patent stake in the ground in multiple countries.
This talk will address basic strategies for developing a patent portfolio outside of the United States. Consideration will be given to planning from the beginning for potential foreign patent applications, filing foreign patent applications by way of consolidated international and regional mechanisms (e.g., Patent Cooperation Treaty ("PCT"), the European Patent Office, and other regional patent applications that cover more than one foreign country), filing directly in countries that are not part of consolidated efforts, and planning for expected costs associated with foreign filing.
