There Had To Be A Better Way

My patented invention is an FAA certified child aviation restraint made of belts and buckles that weighs 1 pound, fits in a 6 inch stuff sack, and takes the place of the 20 lb car seat that used to be the only way safety conscious parents could keep their kids safe in airplanes. It is called CARES ( child aviation restraint ). For years the American Academy of Pediatrics, and other safety organizations have told parents that the airplane lap belt alone is not safe for little kids because they can't brace in turbulence or a rough landing, and urged them to bring along their car seats - awkward and heavy though they were (few did!). No one had come up with a sensible solution, and post 2001 airports became even more difficult to navigate with kid's clumsy paraphernalia.

I will tell the story of CARES: how I thought it up; got it patented, developed the selected business plan; found the right manufacturer, and then brought it to market, including both web and "bricks and mortar" stores. Over 40,000 units have been sold since it was certified by the FAA 2 ½ years ago. There were many choices to be made along the way - and still are as the business is evolving from just a domestic clientele, to international spheres, and from just serving kids 22-44 lbs to serving older children and kids with disabilities.
