Thinking Critically About Innovation

The scene is a classroom filled with business students. The professor asks a question in which a student responds, “I’m assuming there’s oil in the pipeline,” to which the professor responds, “Miss Crowley, assuming doesn’t feed the bulldog.”

This old United Airlines commercial parallels nicely with what typically happens when people come up with the “perfect idea” – they assume too much. They assume their idea is unique. They assume customers will value the idea as envisioned. They assume there are enough customers to make a market. They assume money can be made.

Rob Smart will facilitate an interactive discussion on how to think critically about product and license opportunities. Rob will also discuss what you should be prepared to discuss with investors, corporate partners, or customers from idea through launch stages. Throughout his presentation, Rob will encourage the audience to share what has worked and not worked based on personal experiences.
