Thomas Rainey
Thomas Rainey is the President of the Vermont Center for Emerging Technologies (VCET) in Burlington, Vermont. VCET is a targeted initiative designed to foster the success of new high-technology firms in Vermont. Tom holds a Master's Degree in Science and Technology Policy (March 1988) from Lund University, Sweden, a Graduate Degree in Social Sciences, (June 1986) from the University of Stockholm, Sweden, and a Bachelor of Science in Political Science (August 1985) from Washington University, St. Louis, Missouri. Tom is fluent in Swedish, Danish, and speaks conversational French and Norwegian.
- From January 2001 to September 2004 Tom was President of Rainey & Associates; a consulting firm specialized in science and technology-based economic development.
- From 1998 –2000 Tom worked director of the Florida/NASA Business Incubation Centers managing this nationally recognized technology incubator program designed to assist entrepreneurs associated with the Kennedy Space Center.
- From 1993 - 1998 Tom served as the Director of the St. Louis Enterprise Centers in Missouri and developed a network of five incubators serving over 100 new businesses.
- From 1994 to 1995, Tom served as Business Development Manager for the St. Louis Defense Adjustment Program.
- From 1989 to 1992 Tom was the Executive Director of the California Central Coast World Trade Center.
- Tom is also a consultant and has provided management consulting services to start-up incubators in Santa Fe, New Mexico, La Crosse, Wisconsin, and on several assignments in Europe.
- Tom has served on the board of numerous public organizations, including the Board of the University of Central Florida's Technology Incubator in Orlando, the Jacksonville Technology Enterprise Center, the Space Coast Chamber of Commerce, and the Brevard Founders Forum.
- In 2003 Tom received a national leadership award from the Congressional Business Advisory Council though a nomination from Congressman Tom Delay’s office, House Majority Leader.
- In 2004 Tom was inducted into the Vermont Academy of Science and Engineering (VASE) as an affiliate, and invited to serve as a Vermont Business Center advisory board member at the University of Vermont.
